COVID-Related Notices

August 27, 2021

We love being back in person with our students! Thank you to all our students, staff, parents, and health partners at East Side Health District for working together to keep our campuses safe. Our students do a great job wearing masks correctly and following social distancing guidelines.

Students are now participating in on-site PCR COVID testing. This weekly testing, called Shield, is designed to also catch asymptomatic carriers of COVID. This is essential in helping us maintain safe learning environments so we can catch those who are COVID positive before they infect others. Details can be found here: COVID On-Site Testing

Parents: Please know that if there is a COVID case identified, it is East Side Health District (not School District 189) that determines who needs to quarantine and for how long.

Here are some of the steps taken by School District 189 after a positive COVID case has been reported:
- We notify ALL parents at that campus location. This is simply a courtesy message. It does NOT necessarily mean that your child needs to quarantine.
- In separate communication, specific students will be ordered by East Side Health District to quarantine if they had close contact with the person who tested positive. This is separate communication and while it may be shared by school district staff, the quarantine is directed by East Side Health District.
- Deep cleaning will be conducted throughout the building.

The majority of our staff have already been vaccinated. Under new state guidelines, all educators will be vaccinated or will also receive weekly Shield testing to further support a safe learning and work environment.

Dear School District 189 Staff, Parents/Guardians, and Students,

As you may know, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker held a COVID-19 press conference today where he issued new rules regarding indoor masking, educational employee vaccination, and testing requirements.

The indoor masking order, statewide, begins Monday, August 30, and the requirement for educational employees to begin their COVID-19 vaccine regimen is September 5. All educational employees must get a COVID-19 vaccination or submit to testing weekly (or more frequently if ordered by the local health department).

We will communicate internally with our staff on the specifics of how we will verify staff vaccination status and coordinate weekly testing for those who have not been vaccinated.

Our consistent and continuous aim is safety, learning, and communication. We’re proud to be open, full day and full time and fully in person. Thank you for your support and understanding, and thank you for allowing us to lead and serve the educational needs for each child, every day!

Steadfast in Excellence,

Arthur R. Culver, Superintendent
