    Mask Updates

    February 28, 2022

Dear School District 189 Staff, Students, and Parents,

I want to thank parents, staff, community partners, and union leadership for sharing feedback and insights with me regarding the question of mask mandates in our schools.  News was released late Friday afternoon that has prompted further changes for our district.

Effective today in Illinois schools, the state mask mandate has been lifted.  As long as local COVID transmission levels and hospitalization numbers remain low, masks are optional for students and staff in the East St. Louis School District.  This is consistent with new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance issued February 25, 2022 that recommends masks are needed only in areas of high transmission.  Also effective February 25, 2022, the CDC does not require masks to be worn on school buses.

School District 189 will continue mitigation strategies that are known to support a healthy school environment.  District Administration strongly encourages mask-wearing while indoors on school property and on school buses.  Shield COVID-19 testing will continue to be available for staff and students on a voluntary basis.

Our local health department, East Side Health District, retains the authority to issue COVID-19 isolation and quarantine orders.  School District 189 will continue to work closely with East Side Health District to maintain a safe learning environment and offer the Test to Stay program for students on a voluntary basis.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work together to provide safety, support, and high-quality education to the students of School District 189.

    Arthur R. Culver, Superintendent
