James Avant is located in East St. Louis, Illinois and serves the communities of Washington Park and Caseyville.
We serve a diverse population of students consisting of African Americans, Caucasians and Hispanics, as well as Special Services students in Kindergarten - 5th grade. We are a school that strives to service the whole student’s needs in our care.

You don't want to miss the June volume of School District 189's SHINE 189 newsletter! This periodic communications tool is focused on Supporting, Helping, Inspiring, Next-Level Educators. Learn about our amazing Class of 2019 graduates. Collectively, they have earned over $12.7 million in college scholarships. Of the 246 graduates, 7 also earned their associate's degree, 75 earned college credits and 19 earned industry-recognized certifications. This issue also highlights the phenomenal Teacher Residency Program (which has produced 12 outstanding new teachers) and the district's new HiSET program to increase access to high school graduation!

Your hard work, along with your school, your family and your community, have shaped you to be prepared for a specific purpose. While we celebrate the milestone of your high school graduation, I encourage you to remember this is not the end. This is the beginning of a critical chapter in the story of your life.
District 189 is seeking talented, committed individuals to join our Urban Ed Teacher Residency Program. The intensive and supportive program will develop highly effective teachers through a yearlong, residency-based training model. Urban Ed residents serve full time, receive a $30,000 stipend and obtain a Master's degree in Education. This 1 year program will prepare teacher residents to become quality teachers and ensure they are culturally and pedagogically prepared for success in the classroom. The past few months have presented several tragedies that have deeply affected the East St. Louis School District family. We have experienced the loss of several student deaths during this time. Individually, each of these losses fills our community with sorrow. Combined, along with other losses of staff, students and former students in the past year, make a deeply profound impact.
Student academic performance in East St. Louis School District 189 is continuously improving and is near meeting national expectations according to the results of an analysis of five years of Northwest Evaluation Association Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test data.
